Finding Favor with God and Relatives

Dea Warford, an evangelist we know sent a message about “Ridiculous Favor” for Christians. Today as I read Proverbs 3:3-4, (NKJV), it stated, “Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”

The heading of Proverbs 3 is “Guidance for the Young,” and there are gems about money and health and peace and delights and correction. We all need God’s favor to navigate calm and rough seas, no matter what age we’ve attained.

Proverbs continually stresses wisdom and tells us the fear of God gives wisdom and gives knowledge. The Bible gives insight for daily living.

Ephesians 5:15-17, (NKJV), says: “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

The following verses in Ephesians 5 show us what to do to please God and Ephesians 5: 22-31 instructs husbands and wives how to live together with love, submission, and respect.

Those three acts under God’s authority and with God’s help will cause marriages to thrive and families to prosper and feel secure. Ephesians 6 begins by teaching children and parents how to get along.

Talk about enabling favorable circumstances! We’re not perfect, but my husband and I have found them to be true.

May God bless you!

Favorite Things About Christmas

Do you have favorite things about Christmas?

I got some Christmas cards in the mail today. I really enjoy sending and receiving cards because we’ve moved enough times that I have friends I don’t hear from like I used to. At Christmas time, as I write out the cards, my mind gets flooded with fond memories of family and friends.

I love hearing the Christmas story in Luke and in Matthew. I try to picture how Mary felt and I feel awe for Joseph’s brave stances to buck society’s standards and follow God’s directions.

This is the first year our church didn’t do the Christmas Eve candlelit service because of Christmas falling on Monday. My husband thought families would want to spend time together at night since they went to church in the morning. I always cherish the time listening to the people share their blessings. Seeing the expectant faces in the shimmering candle light with the overhead lights extinguished is precious. And beautiful.

Shopping for gifts for my loved ones is fun when there’s money in the budget. We always limit the amount and tell our family not to expect extravagant items. Some folks go into debt, we don’t go for that. To us, Christmas is about the Savior’s birth.

I think it’s fun to get presents, my husband doesn’t. So, our kids respect that and either give to charity in their dad’s name, or just say “Merry Christmas,” and leave it at that. His dad didn’t want us to spend money on him either, but an occasional small antique item, like salt and pepper shakers and a magnifying glass caused a smile to light up his face. I don’t expect anything from my children, but if they choose to get something, they know I prefer an inexpensive gift.

I’ve been more sentimental lately, and when my husband told the Christmas story from Mary’s point of view, her willingness to listen to the angel and then her obedience to the privilege of being mother to the Son of God, with all the unanswered questions she pondered over, well, I almost cried in church.

As my husband said, she really didn’t know what she was getting herself into, but she never hesitated. She trusted God. When I read Daniel a day or so before the sermon, I noticed that Daniel fainted when the angel spoke to him. The angel told him not to be afraid. When Daniel said his strength left his body, the angel supplied strength to Daniel’s body, mind and spirit. When the heavenly being told about end times, it kind of scared me, because so much of what was said seemed like it could be current events. Other things, I couldn’t make sense of. I wish I had my youngest son nearby because he graduated from college with a degree in History, and I thought he might be able to interpret some of the military battles. Some of the verses might have been referring to the conquests of Alexander the Great.

Mary heard the same thing from the angel that visited her, “Be not afraid.”

She also was called “highly favored among women.”

She is never called extraordinary. It doesn’t say anywhere in the Bible that she should be prayed to. I think she did her best to follow and honor God. I also assume she was one of the best moms ever, imperfect but gentle and wise is how I imagine her.

Christmas carols prevail on the radio at this season of the year. There are so many beautiful tunes and choruses. I’ve heard some new ones this holiday time that touched my heart.

Well, those are some of my favorite things. Nice meals, Christmas cookies, and family and friends gathering for games need to be included as well.

I tried to write Merry Christmas and include a picture of a creche, but my computer kept freezing up, so I decided to let it rest for a day or two around the twenty-fifth. That’s how life goes sometimes, smooth as whipping cream or bumpy like a topping of walnuts.

May God bless you!

Driving for Changes

I drove North to a city today to pick up my sister from the hospital. She is so much better than she was a week ago.

I wondered if she knew me last week. Nope. She remembered me telling her my daughter’s name and asking if she knew her.

My sister has a black eye today she didn’t have yesterday. She said they gave her quite a bit of heparin and the corner of her eye has been itching, so as she scratched it, it bruised. Same with her arm. That’s a medication that thins the blood to prevent blood clots. She told me the heparin will wear off over time. Praise God.

I was so blessed to have clear roads. The sky was jam-packed with clouds. I heard that city is going to be hit with snow tomorrow. I’m glad I picked her up today.

When we got ready to leave the hospital, I told my sister how kind the social worker and her nurse were. She thought those who work with people in a medical setting who don’t care deeply for others burn out and quit within two years.

She’s been a medical secretary for years and she’s my go to person when I don’t understand blood work numbers or a diagnosis or medicine.

I’m so glad God spared her life from the diabetic ketoacidosis which almost killed her. On a selfish note, I’m glad to be able to stay home and get ready for Christmas, Lord willing.

It is an adventure following God. My days completely change on occasion and I’ll sense God’s Spirit whispering, “I’ve got this.”

Other times, a tiny thought, “You don’t have to worry.”

I hope you’re well. May God bless you!

Walk This Way Only

Deuteronomy_5:33, (KJV): Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.

I went to visit my sister in the hospital on Thursday and some of this Scripture popped into my mind for her. Something about when the Lord directs her, she should turn to the left. When the Lord directs her, she should turn to the right.

She was a bit disoriented because of a fall. High blood sugar caused her to get dizzy. She fell into the bathtub and bruised her forehead and stayed knocked out for a while. When I arrived with my daughter, those whispers of words came into my head, indicating she should listen to the Lord and follow the pathway He sets for her.

She kept nodding off, so I intend to write down what I remember for her. In the meanwhile, as she recovers I thank God that she is recovering.

I don’t understand insulin and why blood sugar can change so dramatically depending on her eating habits and the amount of stress in her life. All I know is she can’t do it alone. That’s why God gave her family and good friends and professionals to safeguard her when the diabetes gets out of whack.

We went to a church to visit another pastor and his wife and family and the congregation. We missed out on the singing but stayed for the fellowship. A meeting ran longer than we thought it would, so we were late.

This church believes as we do that the Holy Spirit still heals people. One of the young ladies welcomed us and said that she found this church after praying to God for a church where the Bible is preached from. Then the pastor told us one weekend he and his wife were away for the weekend and she prayed at the altar by herself and sometime later she realized she was pain free. She’d been suffering from fibromyalgia for twenty years. What a vibrant smile she had on her face tonight.

My sister came out of her coma before twenty-four hours passed. She’s still tired and drops off to sleep suddenly, but her bruise is significantly smaller. Her blood sugar was over 600 and now it’s over 100, so she’s on the mend. So many people said they’d pray for her! To God be the glory, great things He has done.

God bless you all!

In the Word

NKJV Giant-Print Personal-Size Reference Bible; Imitation Leather Blackhttps://www.christianbook.com/page/bibles/translations/nkjv?event=Bibles|1000153

I’m in the book of Ezekiel this week. Ezekiel follows Lamentations, and frankly I dreaded reading it. That’s where Jeremiah cries because of the pain of seeing God’s judgment on Israel. Lamentations turned out to be small, so I carried on to Ezekiel in just a little time.

It’s so hard to understand, and I tried to picture the wheel within a wheel, filled with eyes. Disconcerting, actually.

What always comes through is that God has standards and when evil prevails, He finally sends judgment. One of the sayings that kept coming up was, “That you may know that I am the Lord.”

Another verse: Ezekiel 11:5, (ESV), And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and he said to me, “Say, Thus says the LORD: So you think, O house of Israel. For I know the things that come into your mind.”

Now, I’m fully aware that God knows all things, but tonight the idea that He knows every thought that comes into my mind felt intimidating because I’m not perfect. In Proverbs 1:7, (NKJV), it says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

I definitely felt fear or awe of God when I realized He knows my every thought. On the other hand, tonight I was thinking that when I’m struggling, only God knows what kind of spiritual attack I might be under that is causing me to feel discouraged or sick or lonely or whatever malady may come my way.

He knows when I willfully disobey Him and choose to rebel. He knows when I make a mistake. He knows when I get deceived. He knows when I take credit for giftings that He placed within me. He knows everything. It’s a comfort and it’s a reason to consider what my attitude and my actions are going to be.

He sets things out so clearly in Deuteronomy 8:11-20, (ESV), “Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,

Deu 8:12  lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them,

Deu 8:13  and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied,

Deu 8:14  then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,

Deu 8:15  who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock,

Deu 8:16  who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.

Deu 8:17  Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’

Deu 8:18  You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Deu 8:19  And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.

Deu 8:20  Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God.”

God is loving but He’s also tough. He’s not wishy-washy.

Well, in this time of joy and shopping and visiting with many others, as I read along in the Word of God, my thoughts get carried away to what I think God is concerned about.

I hope you’re taking time to ask God what He would have you read and pursue. You may be surprised what He has in mind for you.

One of my favorite verses is Jeremiah 29:11, (ESV), “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

This was written to the Jewish people when they were being warned about the length of their captivity by the Babylonians. At this point, some of them were already taken to that far away land.

These verses remind me that God is a fair judge, yet He’s got the welfare of the people He loves in mind, even when disciplining them. He tells us that He is the same yesterday, today and forever. That gives me hope.

May God bless you.

It Takes Time to Lose Weight

It usually takes time to do things that are worthwhile. I bought fava beans at a health food store and realized they expired in November of 2017. So, the day before yesterday I soaked them overnight. Then last night, I began peeling them and rinsing them. I intended to go to bed about two hours before normal, and then I remembered the beans soaking on the back of the stove. So, I began to peel them by hand and an hour after I hoped to be asleep, I told my husband there seemed to be a lot more of them than before I processed them. I counted sixty more to do after I’d peeled them for fifty-some minutes.

At that late hour, I rinsed them and placed them in the refrigerator in a covered bowl. Tonight, as I thought of going to bed, I remembered I’d never cooked them and after reading about fava beans, which are treated similarly to lima beans, I decided to cook them for half an hour, let them cool and then refrigerate them.

So, once again I am not going to bed early.

I got online to delete e-mails and found an alert for BeautyBeyondBones blog that I follow. She had a Brussel sprout, beet, grape, pistachio nut topping for salad recipe that looked really good. So, I spent fifteen minutes maybe watching Carolyn prepare this multi-colored seared vegetable dish on YouTube while my dried cooked beans cooled.

I’ve been thinking of eating habits because a young lady told me tonight at a Christmas play practice that she’s lost 41 pounds to get ready for a gastrointestinal operation to shrink the stomach way down so she can lose weight rapidly and hopefully keep it off.

I was reading cookbooks to prepare the fava beans and some of my books feature vegan or vegetarian ways of eating. When we were younger, my husband and I began eating according to Dr. McDougall’s advice, along with our family. His diet is carb-based. The hassle that I went through from my parents and other people shocked me. We dropped weight like crazy and ate a lot because we were hungry. The reason we quit was because it was harder to find restaurants that served vegan meals back then and I got tired of eating rigidly.

Now, we aim for vegan or vegetarian eating, but it is difficult to be totally immersed in that eating lifestyle, but when I’m stricter, I feel a ton better. All my blood work improved when we switched back, and we tried to eat a lot more raw food this time. As I eat a doughnut here, a handful of potato chips there, cake and ice cream at a birthday party, etc. I crave more fatty and salty foods, and sweets.

When I avoid that kind of feast-like eating, and then get away from the vegetables, the sweets and fatty foods don’t taste as good and I feel a little sick.

My husband has decided to eat out less, choose better foods at home and not worry about being perfect at eating healthy. I’ve noticed his weight is sliding down some and he acts more energetic lately.

I’m bringing the snack at a function we go to weekly and when I asked a friend for advice, she suggested I not choose a dessert. It’s usually a dessert and sometimes one cooked with a sugar substitute. The only sugar substitutes I use are a stevia kind or xylitol. I use honey or maple syrup or other natural sweeteners and occasionally sugar, but I try and buy raw sugar and limit its use. At least one member of our group has diabetes.

I don’t know how long God intends me to be on this earth, but I’ve noticed that when I eat healthily, drink enough clean water and get exercise I feel a lot better than when I don’t. I think I remember George Burns, the comedian saying if he knew he was going to live this long, he would have taken better care of himself. He lived to be a hundred years old. He’s not the only one who’s said that.

I’ve been thinking I’d like to lose a small amount of weight, but if I decide to pursue it, it’ll take planning to achieve it. I attend a few functions regularly that supply rich snacks or a meal. I’ll have to bring alternatives with enough to share. Hallelujah Acres founder, Rev. George Malkmus suggested vegan eaters tell folks, “I need to eat this way for my health, and people usually understand.”

I also know that it may take a while to get the weight off, but it didn’t come on overnight. It’s been sneaking up on me as I gradually changed habits back to the way I ate when I wasn’t too fussy about the choices in front of me.

People say not to start a diet before Christmas. I don’t call losing weight being on a diet. I just say, “I’m cutting back.”

Instead of eating four Christmas cookies in a sitting, I can have two and not start them until later in the day. When I start my day eating sweets, I crave them all day long.

I hope you are well! God bless!

Christmas Play

As I stacked dishes to wash, I listened to a recording of lines I need to memorize for our annual Christmas play.

I don’t think I’ve ever memorized lines for a play and I’ve only been in three, maybe.

We have two more practices and then the play! I hope the kids will be ready. It’s amazing how fast time goes before a main event.

There’s a tree, candy canes, Christmas songs and lines declaring Jesus’ love. I’m praying God will bless our efforts.

Are you doing anything fun before December the 25th?

May God bless you!

Is Integrity Important?

I listened to a John Hagee program on end time prophecies and then it went to a Perry Stone, Jr. presentation on YouTube. His had prophecy in the title as well. The John Hagee program was entitled “John Hagee – End Times Prophecy – October 4, 2017,” and watching it on television with ROKU gave more material than what I found on computer.

The Perry Stone, Jr. teaching was entitled “Perry Stone |November 28 2017 – PROPHETIC WARNING: End Times Prophecy.”

Perry Stone spoke quite a bit about his father and the legacy he left behind. His dad told him one regret was that the house and $30,000.00 was all he had to his name. In an impoverished country, $30,000.00 may go a long way. In America, depending on housing costs, that may last the surviving spouse one year. Perry told his dad he’d be leaving him more than money. He’d be leaving him a godly heritage. Everyone that knew his dad told Perry that his dad was a man of integrity. He told the audience that we never know when we’ll be called from this life to everlasting life. He said we need to live a life of integrity and obey God so if we should die suddenly we don’t end up in Satan’s domain, suffering for all of time. I don’t remember a lot spoken of regarding prophesies found in Revelation and Daniel and Thessalonians, etc.

He shared lots of stories about experiences with angels and visions and hearing the voice of God and praying fervently, moving the hand of God. He referenced Scripture concerning heaven and as he talked about life after death experiences.

I don’t want to talk about the spectacular here, I want to talk about integrity.

When I hear from people that I know stretch the truth or tell outright lies, the way I listen to them is way different from the way I listen to those who habitually tell the truth. Not truth as they see it, but the bald-faced truth.

A man used to buy espresso from a coffee shop I worked at. One day when he went to talk to my husband about the Lord, with his questions he made this statement, “I don’t tell the truth. It’s my choice and I choose not to.”

I looked at the mother of his children standing by his side, and she dropped her head to look at her feet. I glanced at my husband who decided not to debate this man and felt joy knowing that being honest is very important to him. He learned as a young boy that if he told his parents the truth about situations, it went better for him than if he lied to cover up something he did wrong. When he admitted the wrong-doing, the punishment tended to be lighter than if he tried to hide his deed. He tells people, “if they were asking me, they usually knew about it.”

I like his honesty. If I’m wearing an outfit he hates, I’d rather know it. I bought a jacket that I really like, and women tend to give me compliments on. It’s woven with different colored threads that evoke scenery and I got it on sale many years ago. It’s probably not in style now, but I wear it. After I got it he began calling it my “carpet.”

“Oh, you’re wearing your carpet coat today.”

Of course, I wanted to know more. “Don’t you like it?”

“Why do you want to wear something that looks like a carpet?”

“I like it.”

“Well, if you want to walk around wearing something that looks like you’d walk on it….”

That took some of the joy out of my purchase. So, I wear it when I feel like it and expect some ribbing from him and my son, when he’s visiting. Whenever a stranger tells me “what a pretty jacket,” I smile and feel vindicated.

I notice I wear it more often when he’s at work because I like to wear things he thinks look nice. Yet, I’m happy he let me know it’s not his favorite. If I found out he said it’s great and then laughed with his friends over it, I’d feel hurt and betrayed. Now we joke   about it.

As kids, we used to cry out, “Liar, liar pants on fire…” when we caught someone lying.

I can’t remember the rest, something about hanging on a telephone wire. There was a Rock and Roll song with those words in it, too. Back in my day, the culture reinforced honesty as an important value. People would have scorned anyone that said, “Who’s truth do you believe?”

There wasn’t any relativity in regards to truth.

Occasionally, I run into people that make things look better than they really are. I don’t think that will work in their favor. They’ll lose others’ trust and respect. Usually, in the business world, they’ll lose their customers and in the financial realm it’s called fraud. The truth has a way of coming out.

Scripture speaks strongly against lies: Rev 21:8 (NKJV), But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Well, I didn’t expect to have hell and brimstone comments in this blog, but it came with the Scripture about liars. I truly believe the Bible is the inspired word of God spoken to men and they wrote it down.

2Timothy 3:16, (NKJV) says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,”

May God bless you!
